Bunnies 2.1.5 Released

There's a brand new game server running which will improve performance. Older versions of Bunnies should still work with the new server. However, you should upgrade your client since the new version supports multiplayer. In order to take advantage of multiplayer you will need an account on the Bunnies web-site. Update settings.ini to log in as your Bunnies user. You can set your in game handle through the Bunnies web-site.

When you are logged in you will see any other logged in players as well who are playing the same map. Press the "~" key to toggle chat mode so you can type in messages and send them to the other players in the same map as you.

At this time enemies are not server controlled which means that if you see any bunnies hopping around or soldiers, you're responsible for shooting them.

Bunnies 2.1.1 Released

Bunnies now features chat! If you are logged in you can send messages to everyone else who is logged in. Just press "~" to open up the console and start typing. Press "Enter" to send the message. The title bar will indicate when a text message has come in so you can close the console and continue playing and still know when messages are coming in.

When you log into the Bunnies web-site there is now an "Account" tab which allows you to set your handle. You can change it at anytime but it must not already be used by someone else. If you don't have a handle your e-mail address minus the domain will be displayed instead. For example if your account e-mail address is "bob@example.com" then your handle will appear as "bob@" which indicates an e-mail address is being used and not an actual handle.

Real handles can only contain alphanumeric, dash and underline characters. They are limited to 16 characters.

If you are not logged in you can only send messages to yourself and receive messages from yourself.

The web interface now supports setting bump and depth maps for tiles.

Windows Built in Extractor Not Supported

Windows comes with a built in program which can uncompress zip files. The Bunnies zip files are not compatible. Bunnies zip files can be uncompressed using WinZip or WinRAR.

Bunnies 2.1.0 Released

New Features:

* Bump maps for tiles

* Depth maps for tiles

* Improved lighting effects

* Bilinear Filtering

* Exits

Bump and depth maps are supported but the ability to edit them has not been implemented in the web interface yet.

Bilinear filtering improves the look of sprites and walls when they are close up.

Exits are represented by big giant Exit signs in game. Exits can be defined using the on-line map editor.

The game rules have been adjusted in this release. You must kill all enemies and bunnies and then find the exit to move on to the next level.

New Map Feature

When editing maps you can now set up exits to any other map you have created. Having exits allows for a change in the game rules. Currently the settings.ini file determines the level order and upon killing all enemies and bunnies you automatically move onto the next level. The latest client currently in development will not proceed to the next level until you find an exit. Levels can have any number of exits to any level. Although the client can choose which level to start on, the level designer chooses the flow of the levels.

The key reason for this change is that Bunnies! is moving towards multiplayer of some form. By not being forced out of a level players can hang around and explore or chat before moving on if they choose to. Designers can now also test levels without having to place any enemy characters in the map.

The latest client will be released soon. The lingering issue is how to represent exits in the game. Currently they are invisible.

Bunnies 2.0.4 Released

This release fixes a few minor bugs.

* Bunnies can now be seen hopping above walls

* Collision detection improved to prevent Bunnies from going through walls

* Bump/Depth Maps are now stretched to fit

* Depth map scale reversed. Black is now deepest and white is shallowest

* URL for downloading tiles has been updated (old URL still works for now)

Bunnies 2.0.3 Updated

Bunnies 2.0.3 now properly supports bump mapping for objects. This effect is demonstrated in Map 6.

This web-site has also been updated. The style has been modified and performance has been improved.

Bunnies 2.0.3 Released

A new video has been posted in the media section demonstrating the advanced lighting now available in Bunnies.

"L" turns on and off the lighting effects and "M" turns on and off the bump mapping effects.

Also fixed in 2.0.3

* a bug in the map rendering which caused gaps between the floor/ceiling and walls.

* a bug which caused the game to crash if you minimized the window

Patch Released

Bunnies 2.0.2 is now out. Download link is to the left. This update fixes the lighting effects resulting in less of a speed reduction when the lighting effects are on (press 'L' in game to turn on lighting effects). Bugs in the lighting code have been fixed resulting in better lighting effects.

Bunnies 2.0.2 is also compiled with "Release" mode optimizations resulting in a 50% framerate increase. Visual Studio Express does not support "Release" mode so if you recompile the code using that compiler you will lose the speed increase.

Beachballs now do not have a bounce limitation. Instead, the velocity of the ball decreases over time and hitting a wall decreases the velocity faster. When the beachball drops below a certain velocity or hits a moving object (not including the player) it is destroyed.

Bunnies 2.0 is Live!

Bunnies 2.0 requires Windows 2000/XP/Vista with the latest updates. A 1.6Ghz processor or faster is recommended. An internet connection is required to play.

The Nazis are at it again. This time they're breading giant rabbits that will destroy the earth by eating all the green plants we need to generate oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide. These mutant bunnies multiply every 20 seconds or so. Unless you want to pay the Nazis for oxygen tanks and air conditioning I suggest you kill all the bunnies. You also need to kill all the Nazis and their little dogs, too, to make sure these bunnies never come back.

The bunnies are harmless to humans but will uttery destroy the planet.

Up/Down move you forward and backwards. Left/Right rotate your view. Spacebar shoots. You can hold it down for rapid fire.

There are currently two levels. The first level has a few guards that will fire on you as soon as you start. Shoot them and then go kill the bunnies.

The second level is more complex. Follow the corridors and avoid getting killed by guards, dogs and ss soldiers. Oh yes, and don't forget to kill the bunnies.

If you fail to kill the bunnies fast enough they will multiply. The game is over if the bunnies reach a population of 100.

What is Bunnies!?

Basically, Bunnies! is a first person shooter. The goal of the game is to shoot beach balls at all the bunnies before they multiply and overwhelm you. If the bunny count reaches 100, you lose.

Bunnies! uses an advanced Wolfenstein 3D style rendering engine written. It features true color graphics, large textures and lighting effects including shadows.

You can either choose to simply play Bunnies! or you can use this web-site to create and manage your own maps to play in the game. At this time there are no limits in place. Feel free to upload as many image files as you need and make as many maps as you want. Over time the help will improve for those who are having trouble figuring out how to use the site.

I highly recommend Safari (available in the downloads section for Windows) because it is the best at meeting the requirements for this website. IE 7, Safari or Firefox are required to use the map editing portion of this web-site.

Bunnies! is 100% free. The source code is included with the Bunnies! download. Enjoy!
